Exclusive: Andy Samberg to Produce 'I.P. Man' Film From Ryan Ridley Based on Dollar Tree’s 'Final Faction' Toy Line
Plus, a tribute to the late David Lynch, and my thoughts on Greta Gerwig's IMAX deal for 'Narnia,' and the trailer for Robert De Niro's 'The Alto Knights.'

It’s Friday, and you have no idea how ready for the weekend I am, even though there’s no rest for the weary.
At least Phase 1 of Oscar season is over, as nomination voting officially closed at 5 p.m. PT this evening. Variety wasted no time in suggesting that voters aren’t finishing A24’s 3.5-hour epic The Brutalist, which could explain why Felicity Jones hasn’t garnered as much awards traction as her peers Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce — because she only appears in the second half of the film. We’ll see if that theory holds water next week when nominations are announced.
Elsewhere in Awardsville, the PGA and ASC announced their nominees, and Nickel Boys was snubbed by both. You don’t say…
There were also a handful of reschedulings, with the American Cinematheque’s Tribute to the Crafts now set for Jan. 24, the AFI Awards Luncheon now dated for Feb. 6, and the oh-so-prestigious Critics Choice Awards now slated for Feb 7.
Last night, I watched the first episode of Morgan Neville’s four-part Peacock documentary SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, which covered auditions for the famed comedy series. My buddy and I laughed our asses off for the first 30 minutes of the episode, which at 65 minutes, inevitably starts to drag. But it’s still a strong start, and I can’t wait to watch the rest of the episodes, which cover the show’s writing staff, the infamous “Cowbell” sketch, and the cursed Season 11, which nearly ended the show.
Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man is off to a decent start at the box office, though Disney’s Mufasa is expected to roar the loudest this weekend. The Blumhouse horror movie took in $1.4 million in Thursday night previews.
I already saw Wolf Man on Monday, so tonight, I’m looking forward to watching the last episode of Brian Tyree Henry’s upcoming Apple TV+ series Dope Thief (due in March and under embargo), the latest episode of Beast Games, and the Season 2 premiere of Apple’s Severance. I also plan to check out the Jamie Foxx-Cameron Diaz movie Back in Action on Netflix this weekend, in between all the NFL action.
Before we get started this evening, I want to highlight Variety’s story about the chaos behind the scenes of the Brian Epstein/Beatles movie Midas Man, which sounds like a real shitshow.
Tonight’s newsletter includes an interesting scoop about Andy Samberg and his Lonely Island buddies, as well as a complicated tribute to the late, great director David Lynch.
Plus, there are items about Greta Gerwig’s Narnia, Luca Guadagnino’s DC movie with Daniel Craig, Spike Lee’s new movie, the latest additions to Scream 7, and the trailer for Robert De Niro’s new gangster movie The Alto Knights.
