Exclusive: Anne Hathaway to Produce Epic Romance 'Forever' for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax

Plus, Jon Stewart’s future at 'The Daily Show,' Benicio del Toro’s 'Reptile' reunion, Paul Dano’s return to A24, and a look at Paramount's trailer for 'Scream 7.'

Happy Monday, folks!

So much has happened since I was last in your inbox. For starters, the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled out a gutsy Game 7 win in Toronto to claim back-to-back World Series titles. Congrats to Will Smith (not that one) and all the Dodgers fans out there…

Over the weekend, the Halloween box office tanked, in keeping with the rest of October. This prompted numerous pundits to wonder why Hollywood punted on the weekend and let the box office wilt last month, though Scott Mendelson points out that until recently, WB had planned to release Mortal Kombat II, and that Lionsgate had originally planned to release its Michael Jackson biopic in October. Plus, there wasn’t a Saw movie ready because the franchise changed producers this year, so expect a fresh approach whenever that IP returns to the big screen.

Over the weekend, I watched Wes Craven’s New Nightmare as well as the first few episodes of Rachel Sennott’s new HBO series I Love L.A., which was better than I expected, to be honest. Plus, I drove up to Santa Clarita to see A24’s Pillion, which is enjoying a hush-hush qualifying run on a single screen at the Laemmle Newhall.

Pillion is a very impressive feature debut from English writer-director Harry Lighton, who adapted the novel by Adam Mars-Jones.

The film is about a submissive bottom (Harry Melling) who meets a dominant top (Alexander Skarsgard) and catches feelings, and it’s quietly heartbreaking.

I can see why A24 is giving Pillion an Oscar-qualifying run — both leads are excellent.

Melling is best known for playing Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter movies, and after Pillion, you will never look at him the same way again. Meanwhile, Skarsgard has really worked on his craft and has come a long way as an actor. He takes a major risk here and delivers a layered performance as a biker who wraps himself in leather but still has a heart beating underneath it all.

There’s a considerable amount of gay sex in Pillion, but it never feels gratuitous, and obviously, the relationship between these two men is about much more than sex — it’s about power, control, and consent.

If those themes sound interesting to you, get your ass up to Santa Clarita this week. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until early February for A24 to give the film a proper theatrical release.

Tonight’s top story concerns Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway and a new project she’s developing under her Somewhere Pictures banner.

There are also items involving Jon Stewart’s future at The Daily Show, Benicio del Toro’s Reptile reunion, a new Charlize Theron movie, Paul Dano’s return to A24, and who will play Audrey Hepburn on the big screen. Plus, a look at the trailer for Scream 7, which brings back Neve Campbell at the expense of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega.
