'Archie' Lives! Lord & Miller to Produce New Movie at Universal as 'Riverdale' Creator Sets Zombie Series at Disney+

Plus, Zack Snyder's pivot from Netflix to indie film, Ben Stiller's WWII survival movie, and my thoughts on A24's trailer for 'Marty Supreme' starring Timothee Chalamet.

It’s Tuesday night, and I’m back with more scoops!

But first… this weekend, I finished watching a pair of upcoming Apple TV+ series — The Savant starring Jessica Chastain and The Last Frontier starring Jason Clarke. Both are under embargo for a few more weeks, so stay tuned for more on those shows.

I also took myself to see Nobody 2 — strangely, Universal didn’t invite me to a screening — as well as Tony Tost’s feature directorial debut, Americana, starring Sydney Sweeney and Paul Walter Hauser.

Americana wasn’t bad, but I’d also stop short of calling it good. It very much felt like a first film, one that might fare well at a festival and nowhere else, and while I enjoyed the ensemble and its violent second half, the film ultimately felt a little thin.

Of the two new releases, I actually thought Nobody 2 was the more successful movie. It’s nothing special — we’ve gotta move away from the fight choreography that has become standard-issue in every 87North production — but it delivered on what the trailer promised, and the sequel’s water park setting gave it a Looney Tunes-esque feeling that recalled Home Alone, had Kevin McAllister grown up to be a secret spy.

This week, Paramount made it official with the Duffer brothers, signing the uber-talented Stranger Things creators to an exclusive four-year deal. They’ll create movies and TV shows for Paramount while juggling the live-action Stranger Things spinoff that Netflix is expecting, in addition to their two new series that will debut on the streamer next year — The Boroughs and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.

Elsewhere, Paramount announced an output deal with Legendary, and Puck’s Matt Belloni reports that the first title is expected to be the Street Fighter movie starring Jason Momoa. I broke the news that comedian Eric Andre was being eyed to play the film’s ring announcer, Don Sauvage, and his casting has now been confirmed by Nexus Point News.

And speaking of confirmations, Deadline also confirmed my scoop from earlier today about Momoa boarding The Pirate at Amazon MGM Studios. Toldja!

Tonight, you’ll read about the future of Archie Comics on both the big and small screens, plus Zack Snyder’s pivot to indie film after butting heads with Netflix.

There are also items about Ben Stiller’s new WWII movie, a new take on Death of a Salesman, Guy Pearce playing Rupert Murdoch, and the latest cast additions to new films from directors Luca Guadagnino and Chris Rock, followed by my thoughts on the trailer for Josh Safdie’s A24 movie Marty Supreme starring Timothee Chalamet.
