Can Oscar Winners Angelina & Nicole Hold Off Demi as She Seeks Her First Nomination? — 'For Your Consideration'

Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and I reveal our first predictions in the Best Actress category, where the only locks appear to be two first-time nominees.

On an all-new episode of For Your Consideration — Hollywood’s #1 awards-themed talk show — Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider discuss the Best Actress race.

Right now, we all agree on only three actresses, though only two of them are considered “locks” for their first nominations — Karla Sofia Gascon of Emilia Perez and Mikey Madison of Anora.

From there, you’ve got past winners Angelina Jolie (Maria) and Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), though Perri is skeptical about Jolie’s chances at this stage, which is totally fair. Her Maria Callas biopic might end up being this year’s Maestro — a well-made movie that no one really wants to watch.

After those four, the fifth slot is anyone’s guess, and right now, it’s projected to be a battle between Demi Moore (The Substance) and Amy Adams (Nightbitch). But as I point out — if you’re an Academy member, do you really want to give Adams her 7th nomination for a movie that she stands no chance to win for, or do you want to give Moore her first nomination for pushing herself outside of her comfort zone and laying it all out there in a gonzo kind of way?

I think the answer is self-evident, though the Academy certainly has a bias against horror.

Of course, there are plenty of other contenders, including Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore from Pedro Almodovar’s English-language debut The Room Next Door, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Mike Leigh’s hard-edged drama Hard Truths, Saoirse Ronan in the recovery drama The Outrun, and June Squibb in the action-comedy Thelma.

Unfortunately, no one seems to be talking about Cynthia Erivo’s upcoming turn in Wicked, for which she may have to settle for a Golden Globe nod.

There are still a bunch of contenders that no one will see until NYFF, AFI Fest, and beyond, so we’ll see if Robin Wright (Here) enters the awards conversation, or whether Fernanda Torres’ campaign for I’m Still Here catches any momentum this season. And don’t sleep on Anna Kendrick’s work in her directorial debut Woman of the Hour, which hits Netflix on Oct. 18.

As of now, our CURRENT PREDICTIONS include Karla Sofia Gascon (Emilia Pérez), Angelina Jolie (Maria), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance).

We have ambitious plans for FYC this season, as we’d like to incorporate some interviews into the show, and possibly host some roundtables as well. So if you represent crafts contenders in the below-the-line categories, or you represent documentaries, animated movies, or international features, please reach out, as we’d love to work with you, and our advertising rates are a bargain considering our collective reach across social media.

I’ll also be emailing each episode of FYC directly to actual awards voters (sans paywall).

For Your Consideration will now be taped on a weekly basis as awards season ramps up, so thank you for watching, and feel free to leave a comment on Perri’s YouTube channel, as we welcome constructive feedback from all FYC fans. I may even feature select comments in this newsletter — especially if they’re from the Hollywood community, which is also welcome to email me.

Watch the latest episode above, and until next time — when we discuss the Best Actor race — we'll FYC-ya later!
