Will 'Maria' Star Angelina Jolie Be Snubbed for Best Actress? - 'For Your Consideration'

Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and I are worried that the Oscar winner could be overlooked given the strength of this year's field, which now includes 'Wicked's Cynthia Erivo.

On an all-new episode of For Your Consideration — Hollywood’s #1 awards-themed talk show — Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider revisit the Best Actress race, which has added Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) and Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu) in recent weeks.

This race still feels like it’s between Mikey Madison and Karla Sofia Gascón, who play the title characters in Anora and Emilia Pérez, respectively.

Both give fearless performances, which seems to be a theme this year — witness former Oscar winner Nicole Kidman’s work in the provocative psychological thriller Babygirl, or Demi Moore’s turn as a former star struggling with vanity in the acclaimed body horror movie The Substance.

Kidman and Moore could find themselves fighting for the same slot, but the FYC hosts are confident that there’s room for both in this race — but at whose expense?

Jeff suspects it could be Angelina Jolie, who stars in Pablo Larrain’s Maria. Though Scott points out that Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart were both nominated for playing Jackie O and Princess Diana in Jackie and Spencer, respectively, Jeff argues that opera singer Maria Callas isn’t nearly as beloved as those two women. He worries that voters won’t be in a rush to watch Maria, which hits Netflix on Dec. 11.

Elsewhere, Tilda Swinton will be in the mix for Pedro Almódovar’s English-language debut The Room Next Door, while Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s work in Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths may be hard for voters to ignore. And don’t forget Amy Adams, a six-time nominee whose turn in Nightbitch is among the finest of her career.

At this point, Jeff thinks Saoirse Ronan is looking at an uphill battle for The Outrun, and the same goes for Kate Winslet and June Squibb, who have been out there pounding the pavement on behalf of Lee and Thelma, respectively. Both could pull off a surprise nod, while Perri warns her co-hosts not to sleep on Fernanda Torres’ performance in Walter Salles’ Portuguese-language drama I’m Still Here — a vote of confidence that Scott quickly echoes.

Finally, Jeff thinks it’s safe to say that Challengers star Zendaya will have to keep waiting for her first nomination — though that day is inevitable.

As of now, our CURRENT PREDICTIONS are Mikey Madison (Anora), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Karla Sofia Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked).

We have ambitious plans for FYC this season, as we’d like to incorporate some interviews into the show, and possibly host some roundtables as well. So if you represent crafts contenders in the below-the-line categories, or you represent documentaries, animated movies, or international features, please reach out, as we’d love to work with you, and our advertising rates are a bargain considering our collective reach across social media.

I’ll also be sending each episode of FYC directly to actual awards voters (sans paywall).

For Your Consideration will now be taped on a weekly basis as awards season ramps up, so thank you for watching, and feel free to leave a comment on Perri’s YouTube channel, as we welcome constructive feedback from all FYC fans. I may even feature select comments in this newsletter — especially if they’re from the Hollywood community, which is also welcome to email me.

Watch the latest episode above, and until next time — when we revisit the Best Actor race — we'll FYC-ya later!
