Does 'Conclave' Have the Adapted Screenplay Oscar in the Bag? - 'For Your Consideration'

Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and I discuss where both screenplay categories stand as of New Year's Eve, and why 'The Wild Robot' is the frontrunner to win Animated Feature.

Happy Tuesday, folks, and more importantly, Happy New Year!

Tonight, on an all-new episode of For Your Consideration — Hollywood’s #1 awards-themed talk show — Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and I weigh in on the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay categories, as well as the Best Animated Feature race, where one movie is starting to pull away from the rest of the pack.

That movie would be DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which I had only seen half of when we recorded this episode, though I bawled my eyes out once I got a chance to finish watching it. In fact, had I seen it in its entirety beforehand, I would’ve made a far stronger case for a Best Adapted Screenplay nod than I do later in the episode.

Scott and Perri agree that The Wild Robot is the clear frontrunner and that its stiffest competition isn’t Pixar’s Inside Out 2, but rather, the dialogue-free Latvian film Flow, which follows a cat on an epic journey.

Inside Out 2 is a lock for a nomination, however, and the gang feels confident that Memoir of a Snail will slide into the race as well.

While there were a number of choices for the final slot, including Transformers One and Pharrell Williams’ Lego movie Piece by Piece, the hosts were in agreement that Netflix’s Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is looking good for a nom considering the franchise’s track record in the category.

On the screenplay side of the ledger, Conclave is looking like the one to beat for Best Adapted Screenplay, though Sing Sing and Wicked: Part One will surely give screenwriter Peter Straughan a run for his money.

Jacques Audiard is looking like a likely nominee for Emilia Perez, while Scott and Perri think RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes will be recognized for their work on Nickel Boys, though Jeff would prefer to see Denis Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts nominated for Dune: Part Two, or, short of that, Richard Linklater and Glen Powell nominated for Hit Man.

As far as Best Original Screenplay goes, all three FYC hosts believe that directors Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Jesse Eisenberg (A Real Pain), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) will be nominated along with Tim Fehlbaum and his September 5 collaborators Moritz Binder and Alex David.

There are several other movies in contention this year, such as Babygirl, Thelma, and Civil War, but it’s going to be tough to crack this field given some of the heavyweight contenders.

If you’d like to advertise with FYC in Phase 2, please contact me, as hundreds of awards voters subscribe to this newsletter, plus, our collective reach across social media is fairly significant, and we tape on a weekly basis.

Thank you for watching For Your Consideration, and feel free to leave a comment on Perri’s YouTube channel, as we welcome constructive feedback from all FYC fans. I may even feature select comments in this newsletter — especially if they’re from the Hollywood community, which is also welcome to email me.

Watch the latest episode above, and until next time — when we make our final predictions for the Golden Globes — we'll FYC-ya later!
