Revisiting Our Best Picture Predictions: Why Each Film Could Win, or Lose, the Top Oscar - 'For Your Consideration'

Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and I discuss which movie is the current frontrunner, and whether Netflix's 'Emilia Pérez' will be affected by the Karla Sofia Gascón controversy.

Tonight, on an all-new episode of For Your Consideration — Hollywood’s #1 awards-themed talk show — Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and I revisit the Best Picture category and reveal who they think the current frontrunner is a month before the Oscars.

We taped the show live on Friday morning, just as the furor around Karla Sofia Gascón’s wild social media activity was reaching a fever pitch.

Emilia Pérez received 13 nominations this year, hinting at widespread support throughout the Academy, but I think that eye-popping tally simply speaks to the number of elements eligible for an Oscar nomination than it does any real passion for the film.

Personally, I never thought Emilia Pérez was a serious threat to win Best Picture, and I was surprised how many pundits came to that conclusion simply because it received the most nominations.

Scott and Perri think that given the mood in Los Angeles right now, and the world at large, the Academy may vote for a feel-good film like Universal’s triumphant musical Wicked, which I concede features the year’s best ending.

However, I’m sticking with my prediction that The Brutalist is primed to win Best Picture, though Emilia Pérez’s pending descent could bump up Anora on a lot of ballots, paving a path for it to win via the Academy’s preferential ballot.

It’s still wide open, folks, and if the Academy’s international voters choose to rally around one of their own, then Walter Salles’ acclaimed Brazilian drama I’m Still Here could be the beneficiary — if not in this category, then in Best International Feature.
