Artificial Intelligence Weighs In on Plausibility of AI-Themed Spec Script 'Alignment,' Which Sold for 7 Figures

Plus, the carve-outs in James Mangold's Paramount deal, casting rumors for the 'Miami Vice' reboot, and why Hollywood shouldn't be worried about AI "actress" Tilly Norwood.

Happy Thursday, folks!

This week, I watched a few really good indie movies — namely, Seth Worley’s extremely clever, Amblin-esque children’s movie Sketch, which was made on a budget of just $3 million; Esteban Arango’s dramatic thriller Ponyboi, which features a star-making performance from intersex actress River Gallo and an impressive supporting turn from Dylan O’Brien; and V/H/S Halloween, which proved to be one of the better entries in the hit-and-miss horror franchise. The latter film debuts Friday on Shudder.

I also watched the first two episodes of Glen Powell’s new Hulu show Chad Powers, and I don’t really get all the hand-wringing from uptight critics. No, the show isn’t the new Ted Lasso, but I found it to be entertaining enough, and compulsively watchable thanks to Powell’s goofy-yet-charming turn as a disgraced QB who goes to great lengths for a second chance at glory on the field.

Before we dive in tonight, I wanted to mention James Mangold’s new overall deal at Paramount, where he’s developing the crime thriller High Side starring Timothee Chalamet. I’ve seen a lot of folks wondering what this means for Mangold’s Star Wars movie as well as his DC movie, Swamp Thing, and I can exclusively report that Mangold’s deal with Paramount includes carve-outs for those two projects.

I know Mangold is eager to return behind the camera after A Complete Unknown, so we’ll see if he manages to sneak in High Side before venturing to a galaxy far, far away. Swamp Thing feels the furthest away right now, but make no mistake, Mangold definitely wants to make that film and put his stamp on the DCU.

Tonight, you’ll read a unique piece in which AI examines the hot AI-themed script Alignment, a morality tale written by Natan Dotan that sold for $1.25 million against $3 million, and has Joe Wright (Atonement) attached to direct. Plus, my thoughts on AI “actress” Tilly Norwood and why Hollywood shouldn’t be too worried about her topping the IMDb STARmeter.

There are also items about Universal’s Miami Vice movie, a new release date for A Quiet Place Part III, the trailer for A24’s BDSM-themed gay romance Pillion, and a ton of casting updates on Highlander, Road House 2, The Beekeeper 2, and Season 2 of Presumed Innocent, as well as new films from Tony Gilroy, Jonah Hill, and Peter Farrelly.
