David Ellison Splashes the Pot: There’s a New Sheriff in Town Following UFC, 'South Park,' and Chalamet Deals

Plus, my review of Zach Cregger's hit thriller 'Weapons,' and the New Line/Warner Bros. movies he'd be a good fit for next, as well as my thoughts on the new John Rambo.

Happy Tuesday morning, folks!

This weekend, I saw Weapons (review below) and watched a few more episodes of The Savant before embarking on another new Apple TV+ series, The Last Frontier, which stars Jason Clarke, Haley Bennett, and Dominic Cooper. It’s about a plane full of dangerous criminals that crashes in the Alaskan wilderness, wreaking havoc on a small town. I’m under embargo, as the show doesn’t premiere until Oct. 10, but you can check out the teaser here

Yesterday, Deadline confirmed my scoop from last week about Chase Sui Wonders joining the cast of Hulu’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot (more on that one below).

Meanwhile, last night, Taylor Swift revealed the title of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, in a teaser for her upcoming appearance on her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s podcast, New Heights. The Life of a Showgirl is a good album title. Let’s hope Swift came up with it and not Alice Birch

Elsewhere, DC Studios boss James Gunn continues his quest to be the most annoying studio head in Hollywood, calling out people on the internet who don’t understand the intricacies of film finance — as if studio accountants aren’t the greatest magicians on the planet.

Hey Jimbo, maybe take it from me and get off the internet for a little while? Just take the ‘W’ on Superman and get back to work instead of wasting hours rolling in the mud with pigs like me on social media. I know there are folks on the Warner Bros. lot who feel similarly…

Finally, Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has started production at Netflix, Quentin Tarantino has no plans to film his 10th and final film anytime soon, Shrek 5 is moving from December 2026 to July 2027 — the better to avoid Avengers: Doomsday, my dear — and in news that should surprise absolutely no one, Scott Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere will screen at the New York Film Festival in October following its rumored premiere at Telluride.

Speaking of rumors, there was one floating around about Carrie Coon potentially playing the secret villain in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. I looked into it because months ago, there were rumors about Nicole Kidman and Sarah Snook circling the movie, and the trail went cold, so as far as I know, they’re still looking for an authoritative woman in that age range. But I’m told it won’t be Coon, who has a busy fall schedule that includes a stop at the Emmys, where she’s nominated for The White Lotus. She’s also due to return to HBO for Season 4 of The Gilded Age. Sony’s new Spider-Man movie is currently in production, but I don’t think the full cast has been revealed, so stay tuned…

Today, you’ll read why David Ellison is the new sheriff in town following his $7.7 billion deal for the rights to UFC. Plus, I offer my review of Zach Cregger’s creepy new thriller Weapons, which opened above expectations to $43.5 million worldwide — marking WB’s sixth-straight movie to open north of $40 million. Pretty impressive, I must admit…

There are also items about the new John Rambo, another new Pedro Pascal film, A24’s latest festival acquisition, as well as the festival fate of its Timothee Chalamet movie Marty Supreme, the latest family sitcom from the creator of The Goldbergs, Sony’s hot comedy spec, Brillstein’s newest hire, and Hulu’s trailer for Swiped starring Lily James.
