Early Oscar Predictions: Amazon in the 'Hunt' Alongside Safdie Bros. and Netflix, If 'Sinners' Doesn’t Dance a Jig

Plus, John Krasinski returns for another 'Quiet Place' movie, Apple mounts a 'Holiday' series, and a bunch of updates about the DCU, the MCU, Oscar Isaac, and 'Gremlins 3.'

Happy Friday, folks!

Tomorrow, I’m off to Palm Springs for a few days, so don’t expect a newsletter on Monday, though tonight’s should suffice, as it’s jam-packed with fascinating nuggets.

Of course, nothing could be more fascinating than reading Variety’s most recent MCU rankings, which is like watching a car crash in slow motion. This is why I can’t have co-workers. After hashing it out in that conference room, I’d either head back to my desk shell-shocked or head straight upstairs to HR for calling someone a “moron.”

Meanwhile, at the box office, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is hoping for a $40-45 million weekend. Either way, that would represent a steep drop from last week, indicating that the film was front-loaded, as many comic book movies tend to be.

Elsewhere, The Bad Guys 2 should crack the $20 million mark, which is in reach for The Naked Gun reboot, though that movie may clock in closer to $15 million. Don’t forget about the excellent body horror movie Together, which is looking to hit $11 million after opening on Wednesday. That would put it just below Superman ($13.5 million) and just above Jurassic World Rebirth ($8 million). Huzzah!

Tonight, you’ll read about my early take on this year’s Oscar race, as well as some juicy nuggets about the MCU calendar, WB’s Gremlins sequel, and the rights to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, plus Marvel vets Oscar Isaac and Michael B. Jordan.

Plus, there are items about the next A Quiet Place movie, an Apple TV+ series based on The Holiday, Mark Ruffalo’s return to the MCU, Channing Tatum dancing with Charlize Theron, the end of And Just Like That…, the new Academy president, the new EIC of Rolling Stone, and my thoughts on the trailer for the indie thriller American Sweatshop starring Lili Reinhart.
