Emmy Predictions: 'Slow Horses' Will Challenge 'The Crown'; 'Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning May Win

Plus, Dwayne Johnson's rough day, WB's new Margot Robbie movie, and news on James Patterson's 'Alex Cross' series.

Happy Tuesday, folks!

Last night, I finally started reading Glenn Kenny’s Scarface book The World Is Yours, which chronicles the making of Brian DePalma’s 1983 crime movie. I made it through about 1/3 of the book in one sitting, and I’ll report back soon once I’ve finished the whole thing. If you haven’t read Glenn’s Goodfellas book Made Men, order a copy right now.

I also watched Paul Schrader’s Hardcore, starring George C. Scott as a God-fearing, midwestern businessman whose daughter goes missing during a trip to California, forcing him to enter the seedy, pornographic underbelly of Los Angeles in hopes of finding her alive.

I thought the movie was OK — Scott was pretty good as the determined dad — but Schrader’s script gets in its own way too often and in the end, I preferred the similarly-themed 1999 movie 8MM starring Nicolas Cage.

In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read about Dwayne Johnson’s reported bad behavior on the set of Amazon’s Red One, WB’s decision to shell out for a new movie from director Olivia Wilde and producer Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton’s new Netflix movie, and Amazon’s upcoming Alex Cross series, and Apple’s rom-com Fly Me to the Moon starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum.
