Happy Friday, everyone!
Unless, of course, you’re Stephen Colbert. Or Astronmer CEO Andy Bryan.
The two men are all anyone seems to be talking about on social media after CBS unceremoniously canceled The Late Show — not just Colbert’s top-rated show, but the entire franchise, while Bryan was forced to offer a public apology after being caught having an affair with his company’s head of HR at a Coldplay concert, where singer Chris Martin outed the canoodling couple.
Wow!
I know everyone wants to blame Colbert’s cancellation on thin-skinned Donald Trump, whose FCC has been holding up the Paramount-Skydance merger, and though the optics are certainly bad, I’m inclined to take CBS execs at their word. Colbert may have been winning his time slot, but The Late Show has been losing millions of dollars for years, and even before Trump was re-elected, industry observers predicted that networks would pull back on late-night, which hasn’t been nearly as lucrative for them in recent years.
Personally, I’ve never been a big Colbert guy, or a Late Show guy, for that matter, as I was always loyal to Jay Leno over David Letterman (sue me!), but it’s sad to see a comedy institution taken off the air.
As for Bryan, well, that’s going to be one expensive concert for him, as a divorce is likely looming in addition to the public humiliation he has already suffered. So much for discretion, folks!
Elsewhere, I gave Universal and IMAX credit for selling tickets to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey a full year in advance, but HBO basically said “hold my beer” to that strategy, opting to build an entire school to educate the young cast of its Harry Potter series for the next 8-10 years.
Meanwhile, box office analysts are already calling the weekend for Superman, which is on track for a second frame of $60 million — far better than new entries such as Smurfs and I Know What You Did Last Summer, both of which are looking to open around $15 million domestic. It’s been a rough summer for Sony, and I don’t think Caught Stealing will be the light at the end of the tunnel, either.
There’s also Ari Aster’s Eddington, which I’m excited to see tonight, though it’s expected to gross only $5 million, making me wonder if A24 will keep giving him money to make his divisive films.
Tonight, you’ll read a scoop about what may be the first acting project for Grammy-winning rapper Future, as well as my review of Taron Egerton’s upcoming crime thriller She Rides Shotgun.
There are also items about Ryan Gosling teaming up with Will Ferrell, Diego Luna’s new movie with Taylor Kitsch, Brie Larson’s new FX series, Millie Bobby Brown’s new Netflix rom-com, and my take on the streamer’s Deep Purple-infused teaser for Season 5 of Stranger Things, among other stories.
