'Heat 2': Christian Bale Eyed to Join Leonardo DiCaprio in Michael Mann’s New Movie, But Who's Playing Who?
Plus, Tom Cruise and his 'Top Gun: Maverick' co-star Glen Powell have opposite weekends, while Paramount plots the future of 'Star Trek' and Disney looks to the past.

Happy (rainy) Monday, folks!
On Saturday night, I watched the grisly, NC-17 horror movie Meat Kills — recommended for gorehounds — as well as Vincent Grashaw’s indie drama Bang Bang, which features another strong turn from Tim Blake Nelson, who always delivers.
I did catch up with The Running Man on Saturday morning, as my weekly basketball game was rained out. Overall, I found it to be a guilty pleasure due to the strength of its cast, led by Glen Powell, but the film’s third act is definitely messy, and frankly, this isn’t Edgar Wright’s finest hour. The movie is still entertaining enough to be watchable, but it also doesn’t feel like something you need to see in theaters, as the tone is uneven, to say the least.
But hey, at least I saw Wright’s movie. I was supposed to see Osgood Perkins’ Keeper on Saturday night, but I decided to stay in and watch Pluribus as well as Sarah Sherman’s upcoming HBO special, followed by Powell’s episode of SNL.
I wasn’t in a rush to see Keeper after the film was stricken with a D+ CinemaScore before earning just $2.5 million, and much like Shelby Oaks, it feels like I’ll probably catch up with this one as VOD, as Neon has had much better luck with international titles than horror movies this fall.
But hey, credit to Neon for even reporting Keeper’s box office, as Black Bear, the distributor of Sydney Sweeney’s boxing movie Christy, didn’t even bother divulging numbers for Week 2 of the film. Then again, it’s hard to blame Black Bear given the film’s unfairly cold reception from the press, which had its knives out for Sweeney.
Tonight’s top story concerns the latest on Heat 2, which is shaping up to be a Public Enemies reunion between Michael Mann and Christian Bale, who is being eyed to join Leonardo DiCaprio in the prequel/sequel.
There are also items about Tom Cruise and Glen Powell’s opposite weekends, the future of the Star Trek franchise, the latest box office milestone surpassed by Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest movie, Sony’s Labubu project, new films featuring Betty Gilpin and Patrick Schwarzenegger, and the teaser for Disney’s “live-action” Moana movie.
