Exclusive: James Wan Returns to 'The Conjuring' Franchise at New Line — Now Meet the Rest of the Team

Plus, Sydney Sweeney returns to Apple with a 'Fast & Furious' director in tow, and a look at the trailer for John Swab's 'King Ivory,' which landed the director a big gig at Netflix.

Happy Wednesday, folks!

Since we last saw each other, I watched the first four episodes of Season 2 of Hijack, which remains under embargo for three more months, so set a reminder to come back here in January for my review — or just treat yourself to an annual subscription with the holidays coming up. They also make great gifts if you’re looking to impress or annoy a movie-savvy friend.

I also caught a matinee showing of Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, and while I applaud the intention of writer-director Scott Cooper and his leading man, Jeremy Allen White, I can’t say this movie was particularly enlightening, and it certainly wasn’t very entertaining.

It’s a pretty dour movie that finds White’s tortured take on Bruce Springsteen staring off into the distance in quiet reflection far too often. This guy is The Boss? Really?

I honestly really tried to see the poeticism of this film, but other than Odessa Young’s impressive supporting turn, it landed with a thud for me. I also have no idea why Cooper decided to remove that “hole in the floor” speech that the entire trailer was built around. It feels like a real bait-and-switch to me, and the film never lives up to those 2.5 minutes.

I don’t know whether to blame Disney’s marketing department or Cooper for making such a dreary music biopic, but I wonder if David Greenbaum has any regrets about making this project his first big buy. I guess we’ll see when the Oscar nominations are announced in January…

One movie that won’t be winning any Oscars is Sophie Turner’s home invasion thriller Trust, which left me bored to tears. I’ll spare everyone a long, negative review. Instead, I’ll just say that I wish Amazon the best of luck with that Tomb Raider series…

Tonight’s top story is a hot scoop about the future of The Conjuring franchise at New Line.

There are also items involving Sydney Sweeney’s return to Apple, and casting news involving Olivia Wilde, Alana Haim, Murray Bartlett, Claire Foy, Nina Hoss, and Tatiana Maslany. Plus, a look at the trailer for the James Badge Dale movie King Ivory, which landed director John Swab a high-profile gig at Netflix.
