Exclusive: Netflix Seeking Writer for Comedy Inspired by Jenna Bush Hager’s Freshman Year of College

Happy Thursday, folks!

Yesterday, I began watching Season 4 of Reacher, which is under embargo for a little while longer. Amazon also sent over screeners for the new Reacher spinoff, Neagley, though I’m torn on whether I’ll actually watch it. I’ve always liked Maria Sten in Reacher; I’m just not sure the character merits having her own series. Then again, it could prove to be even better than the new season of Reacher. We’ll see…

I also loved the Misty Green trailer that A24 dropped yesterday. I was a big fan of Chris Rock’s Top Five, which hit theaters way back in 2014, and this is his first movie since then. That’s wild! I already figured Rosalind Eleazar for a surprise Best Actress nomination, but watching the trailer again this morning, I started to wonder if Daniel Kaluuya could receive another Oscar nomination. He looks dynamite, but when doesn’t he?

The new trailers for Resident Evil and Clayface also slapped this morning. I’m pretty pumped for both of those genre films, which I expect to perform very, very well despite the stiff competition this fall.

The second half of the year is, indeed, quite stacked, though this morning’s announcement about the Venice Film Festival lineup was a little underwhelming, according to seasoned festgoers. I don’t really care either way, as I’ve never been to Venice and will probably never be able to afford to go, but for those who do pay attention to such matters, let’s say there was a feeling of widespread disappointment this morning. By the way, the fall will now include a new Ali G movie starring Sacha Baron Cohen, whose team gave me a “No Comment” just a few weeks ago. You’ve gotta love the game, folks! Otherwise, why bother even playing it?

And finally, some quick hits from yesterday. Thumbs up on Jonathan Levine directing Days of Thunder 2 for Paramount. I’ve been a fan of his since the Mandy Lane days. I wouldn’t have thought of him for the racing sequel, but I’m happy for him all the same; I’m also happy about Glen Powell reuniting with Richard Linklater on a Lou Gehrig movie at Universal. That sounds like a great role for Powell, who tends to be in good hands with Linklater. However, I’m afraid I’m skeptical of Sony signing up for a Treasure Island movie from Ridley Scott and Hugh Jackman. Didn’t anyone see Pan? Not every big splashy agency package needs to sell…
