Exclusive: 'Loki' Helmer Kate Herron Among 'The Last of Us' Season 2 Directors
Plus, my thoughts on the close of Oscar voting, the predictable Emmys, and the impact-free Critics Choice Awards.
Well, the Emmys were last night. Congrats to all of the winners, especially my boy Paul Walter Hauser, and the Pride of Dorchester, Ayo Edibiri. By the way, I totally called Jeremy Allen White as a future star back when I wrote the world’s very first review of Shameless in 2010, but that’s neither here nor there.
The truth is that I didn’t watch a single second of the Emmys… and that includes the monologue, though my father told me he enjoyed the show and that he thought “Anthony” did a nice job hosting — as if he’s on a first-name basis with Anthony Anderson.
Honestly, it’s nothing personal. I’ve never really watched the Emmys… unless I’ve had to, for work. Don’t get me wrong, I love television, and I do watch a lot of it, I just don’t watch the same five shows that everyone else does, so I’ve never gotten too wrapped up in the pageantry of the Emmys.
And I understand why the Emmys are split into dramas, comedies, and limited series/TV movies — because there are 600 shows released a year — but by doing that, the Emmys feel strangely less competitive than the Oscars — they’re simply not as big a deal. They never have been and they never will be. But for more on last night’s Emmy winners, read below…
In tonight’s edition, you’ll read about Loki director Kate Herron, Marlon Wayans, Chad Stahelski, Tina Fey, Lorne Michaels, Anne Globe, Woody Harrelson, Ava DuVernay, Yorgos Lanthimos, Sean Baker, Greg Daniels, and the Oscar battle between Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone.
