Happy Friday, folks!
The X-Men rumors continue to fly as Marvel hurries to close deals ahead of D23. As THR noted this evening, Christopher Abbott is high on the list for Professor X, and I know Marvel is high on him, as they’ve tested him for several roles in the MCU over the years, including the role of Reed Richards in last year’s Fantastic Four movie. Nothing official yet, so stay tuned…
Last night, I saw Jane Schoenbrun’s queer slasher movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which was borderline unwatchable and a fairly notable step down from their debut, I Saw the TV Glow.
I recognize that neither of Schoenbrun’s films is technically supposed to be “for me,” and that there is definitely an audience for what they’re selling, but I found the movie to be preachy, boring, and ultimately, a confusing and confused queer riff on Adaptation. It’s basically for people who have never had an orgasm or never given anyone an orgasm.
Oddly enough, I really enjoyed the Hollywood Zoom call in the middle of the movie, as it reminded me of the Robert McKee scene in Adaptation. I’d like to see Hannah Einbinder in something else because I loved her work on Hacks, but Schoenbrun’s messy script leaves Einbinder stranded here. And the less said about Gillian Anderson’s campy turn, the better. This one is strictly for the diehards, I’m afraid…
I’ve got a pretty interesting update on a hot TV project tonight, as well as my personal picks to direct Spider-Man 5, Jurassic World 5, Michael 2, and Lionsgate’s reboots of Saw and American Psycho. Don’t worry, Luca Guadagnino is still attached to direct the latter — the question is for how much longer.
Speaking of which, I’m told that Jason Reitman’s live-action Astro Boy movie will not be moving forward at Sony. The project could, of course, be resurrected by someone else down the line, but it seemed like a passion project for Reitman, so this may be the end of the line on that one. Apologies to all the Astro Boy fans out there…
