Holding the Line: Why Lucasfilm's 'Star Wars' Talks With Mikey Madison Ended Without a Deal
Plus, a review of 'The Accountant 2,' my thoughts on Nate Bargatze hosting the Emmys, and Searchlight's trailer for 'The Roses' starring Benedict Cumberbatch & Olivia Colman.

It’s Wednesday night. Do you know where your offer stands?
Earlier today, I reported that Mikey Madison had been offered a supporting role in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie, only for Variety to report several hours later that she had passed on the project. More on that below, but it was funny seeing the internet try to dunk on me when the trades not only confirmed my report, but multiple scoops I’ve dropped over the last few months.
Today, Deadline confirmed that Christian Bale would join Nicolas Cage in David O. Russell’s Madden movie (first reported in December) and that George Tillman Jr. would direct the latest adaptation of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None (first reported in October). Meanwhile, Variety confirmed that Peyton Manning has joined the cast of Bradley Cooper’s next film, which I first reported last month.
The truth is that some things pan out and some things don’t, but no matter what happens, the reason is always out of my control. I’m not so delusional that I think my reporting affects anything.
All I can do is trust my sources — a strategy that seems to be working out pretty well, for the most part, and spares me the heartache I frequently experienced at the trades when I would hold stories only to get burned.
Tonight, I’ll explain why Madison passed on Star Wars, and who I think Levy should be considering for the film’s teenage lead. Plus, I review the new action-thriller-cum-buddy comedy The Accountant 2 starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal.
There are also items about the new Emmys host, Jessica Chastain’s new horror film, the supporting cast of David O. Russell’s Madden movie, who will play Bill Parcells on the big screen, Lindsay Lohan’s new TV series, CAA’s latest big signing, and the trailer for The Roses starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.
