The 25 Most Anticipated Movies of 2025, From PTA and 'RIP' to Michael Jackson, Springsteen, and 'Superman'

Plus, a review of Noah Wyle's new Max series 'The Pitt,' and the latest episode of 'The Hot Mic,' which includes a fiery discussion about the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni circus.

Happy Friday, everyone, and again, Happy New Year!

I spent New Year’s Eve rewatching genre flicks like Blink Twice and Strange Darling, both of which are very well-directed. Zoe Kravitz didn’t get enough credit for what she accomplished with her debut, and JT Mollner delivered a gripping two-hander with a clever structure that hides a juicy twist. If you like smart, stylish thrillers, be sure to check out these two movies.

I kicked off 2025 with a lazy New Year’s Day that included a rewatch of Wicked: Part 1, and I’ve gotta say, the last 30 minutes of that movie are superb. I found myself crying as the credits began to roll, having been overcome by emotion when Elphaba took to the skies on her broom like some kind of misunderstood Superman. Jon M. Chu directs the hell out of that moment, and it really soars thanks to the music and Cynthia Erivo’s powerful voice.

Later that night, I watched Jackie Brown, which is one of my all-time favorites. I seem to appreciate it more as I’ve gotten older, to the point where there are days I think it’s the best movie that Quentin Tarantino ever made. Samuel L. Jackson is incredible in this movie, and I can only hope to be as smooth as Robert Forster when I’m that age. This is a classic that belongs in any discussion of Tarantino’s best.

Meanwhile, tonight, I’m off to the theater to see David Fincher’s classic serial killer thriller Se7en in IMAX. It’s one of my favorite films of all time — a truly perfect movie — and I’m beyond excited to see it on the biggest screen possible, the way that Fincher intended before he became a Netflix convert.

But enough about old movies I’ve already seen, right?

In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll get a look at my Top 25 Most Anticipated Movies of 2025 — and 75 bonus titles for good measure!

I also reviewed Noah Wyle’s new Max series The Pitt, and included a fiery new episode of The Hot Mic, where I get extra spicy about the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni circus.
