'The Matrix Has You': WB's Pending Sale to Netflix Is the Inflection Point Hollywood's Been Dreading for Years

Plus, 'Men in Black 5' is in the works, Jon M. Chu gets a first-look deal, Bowen Yang returns to Searchlight, and Paul Dano lands a job — Quentin Tarantino be damned.

Happy Monday, folks! And my, what a week it has been…

I’m finally back on the West Coast following a two-week trek to Boston to show my family dozens (and dozens) of movie trailers. I also showed them One Battle After Another, Relay, Warfare, as well as older titles such as Rebel Ridge, God Is a Bullet, and Patriots Day.

Now that I’m back in town, I’m going to try to see The Secret Agent this week, and I’m looking forward to watching the new Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, on Netflix this weekend. I may even check out the streamer’s buzzy true-crime documentary The Carman Family Deaths tonight.

In recent days, I caught up with Marcel Sarmiento’s 2008 horror movie Deadgirl, which was bleak as hell, but I’m glad I watched it. I’d like to see him make another genre feature, if anyone out there is looking for an interesting filmmaker.

The infamous Golden Globes recognized a few interesting filmmakers themselves this morning, but I’ll dive into that whole mess later this week, when I also unpack the AFI and National Board of Review lists, as well as the LA Film Critics’ picks and those of other kudos groups that don’t matter and make mostly boring choices.

Now that The Batman II mania has subsided — temporarily, of course — it’s time to finally turn my attention to the big Netflix-Warner Bros. deal that every single person you know seems to have a hot take about. Tonight’s top story sees me looking at that deal through the lens of The Matrix, one of the WB titles the streamer is eager to get its hands on.

There are also items about Men in Black 5, Jon M. Chu’s new first-look deal, the latest Chuck Palahniuk adaptation coming to the big screen, the new stars of A24’s Deep Cuts, Bowen Yang’s new Searchlight comedy, and the indie thriller that had the balls to cast Paul Dano, the so-called “weakest actor in SAG.” Plus, my thoughts on the teaser for David Lowery’s mysterious A24 movie Mother Mary starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.
