New Oscar Predictions: Unlike Last Year, There’s No Clear Frontrunner Heading Into the Fall Festivals

Plus, I rank all of M. Night Shyamalan's movies in honor of his birthday and 'Trap,' and weigh in on Netflix's 'Rez Ball' trailer.

Happy Wednesday, folks!

Last night, I had to run off to the premiere of Eli Roth’s Borderlands and I wasn’t able to get the newsletter out in time. My apologies! I can’t say too much about the movie yet, but it was a pleasure meeting veteran hairstylist Sean James before the screening — he’s been working with Jamie Lee Curtis for 20+ years and was a delight to chat with.

When I got home from a fun night at Dave and Buster’s, where a Claptrap robot weaved between all the video games — a fitting venue for the premiere of a movie based on a video game — I rewatched the first half of Gene Stupnitsky’s 2019 comedy Good Boys, which had me cracking up all over again — especially Keith L. Williams, whose innocent delivery in that film is just priceless. He hasn’t been in a movie since 2022’s Secret Headquarters, so let this paragraph serve as a reminder to Hollywood — hire him!

In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read my latest Oscar predictions and how odd it is that there really isn’t a frontrunner this year, which I’ll be calling the Alphabet Oscars for reasons you’ll read below.

Plus, I rank all of the M. Night Shyamalan movies that I’ve seen in honor of his birthday this week, weigh in on the trailer for Sydney Freeland’s new Netflix movie Rez Ball, and discuss items related to Stranger Things, Timothée Chalamet’s big payday, the new hosts of the Emmys, the Fletch curse, and a movie from director Alex Proyas that sounds like Jurassic Park with robots.
