Exclusive: TriStar Taps 'Nanny' Helmer Nikyatu Jusu to Direct Supernatural Thriller in the Vein of 'Get Out'
The in-demand genre director is still developing a vampire movie with Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw as well as a reboot of 'The Fly' and a sequel to 'Night of the Living Dead.'

Happy Friday, folks!
Last night, I saw Luca Guadagnino’s 139-minute anti-thriller After the Hunt, which was a pretty crushing disappointment, as I had high hopes for that one. Even the score from Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor was a letdown that failed to provide the edge this film sorely needed.
There’s an awful lot of talking in After the Hunt, yet the half-baked script never quite figures out what it wants to say. It’s a shame, because the entire cast is quite good — Michael Stuhlbarg is simply divine as Julia Roberts’ catty husband — but sadly, the ensemble gives a wasted effort, as I don’t see this movie sparking a cultural conversation, nor do I see it in the hunt for many Oscar nominations come January.
This morning, I watched the delightful Peacock documentary Downey Wrote That, which is basically another Saturday Night Live documentary timed to its 50th anniversary, but it’s seen through the lens of the show’s most beloved writer, Jim Downey. If you’re an SNL fan, it’s pretty much a must-see.
Tonight, I may check out another documentary, The Perfect Neighbor, on Netflix, though after a long week, I’m also tempted to just turn my brain off and watch a goofy action-comedy like London Calling, which pairs Josh Duhamel with Jeremy Ray Taylor from It: Chapter 1. There’s also Neon’s wildly under-the-radar release of Julia Ducournau’s Alpha, which is playing on a single screen in Covina, though it may be worth the drive.
Meanwhile, this weekend brings the release of Black Phone 2, Good Fortune, and The Mastermind, the latter of which is obviously my top priority. However, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein also enters limited release, and though Netflix hasn’t invited me to a single screening this season, I’ve heard good things about that one.
I’m working on a full newsletter for you guys, but first, here’s a little scoop about a new movie in the works at Sony from director Nikyatu Jusu, whose follow-up to Nanny I eagerly await.
