Will Daniel Craig, Sebastian Stan, or Jesse Eisenberg Nab the 5th Slot for Best Actor? - 'For Your Consideration'
Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and I get into a heated debate about the category, its current frontrunners, and who's on the outside looking in heading into the holidays.
On an all-new episode of For Your Consideration — Hollywood’s #1 awards-themed talk show — Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider revisit the Best Actor race, where A Real Pain star Jesse Eisenberg has been coming on strong in recent weeks.
The question is whether he’s coming on strong enough to beat out Queer star Daniel Craig and actor Sebastian Stan for the perceived fifth slot in the category.
Stan actually has two chances to score a nomination between The Apprentice and A Different Man, and I think he’s tremendous as Donald Trump if people can just get over their political bias.
To me, this race is between Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) and Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), though Scott and Perri still believe in Ralph Fiennes’ chances for Conclave, and neither is ready to write off Sing Sing star Colman Domingo, either.
The Best Actor category is a little thin this year, so it’ll be interesting to see if a grassroots campaign takes hold for dark horse contenders such as Michael Pitt (Day of the Fight) and Jeremy Piven (The Performance), or whether Gladiator II star Paul Mescal’s campaign finds renewed momentum.
There’s also The Piano Lesson star John David Washington and Heretic’s Hugh Grant, who some people think could surprise in this category — but not me. Grant was, indeed, terrific, but there’s nothing anyone can say to convince me that the second half of that film works, and as a result, I don’t think Grant has a chance in hell of a nomination.
But at least his odds are better than those of Joaquin Phoenix, who is hardly a threat to repeat his Oscar win for the Joker sequel.
The same can be said for Challengers star Josh O’Connor, who was generously included in Variety’s Actors on Actors lineup (likely at Stan’s expense) but realistically, there isn’t a world where he’s sniffing a nomination this year.
As of now, our CURRENT PREDICTIONS are Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Daniel Craig (Queer), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).
We have ambitious plans for FYC this season, as we’d like to incorporate some interviews into the show, and possibly host some roundtables as well. So if you represent crafts contenders in the below-the-line categories, or you represent documentaries, animated movies, or international features, please reach out, as we’d love to work with you, and our advertising rates are a bargain considering our collective reach across social media.
I’ll also be sending each episode of FYC directly to actual awards voters (sans paywall).
For Your Consideration will now be taped on a weekly basis as awards season ramps up, so thank you for watching, and feel free to leave a comment on Perri’s YouTube channel, as we welcome constructive feedback from all FYC fans. I may even feature select comments in this newsletter — especially if they’re from the Hollywood community, which is also welcome to email me.
Watch the latest episode above, and until next time — when we revisit the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress races — we'll FYC-ya later!
