Should Skydance Just Walk Away From Paramount, Accept the $400M Kill Fee, and Merge With WB?

Plus, that 'Megalopolis' trailer, and are Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig openly negotiating terms for 'Barbie 2' in the press?

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

It’s been hell dealing with my car over the past 24 hours, but I was given a brief respite last night for two hours while attending Collider’s screening of JT Mollner’s serial killer thriller Strange Darling, which was not at all what I was expecting.

The film is largely a two-hander starring Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner as two strangers whose chance encounter one night has deadly consequences. I was already a big believer in terms of Gallner, who is always interesting to watch, but it was Fitzgerald who really impressed me here. She leaves it all out on the field in this movie, let me tell you. Mollner also does a good job of keeping the audience on their toes with the film’s non-linear structure — it’s told in six chapters — and he shot the whole thing on 35mm film with his talented DP Giovanni Ribisi (you read that right).

When I got home, I watched The Wasp before bed, and that’s another movie that isn’t quite what it seems and asks the audience to pay close attention. Naomie Harris and Natalie Dormer star in this nifty little indie thriller, which Shout! Studios will release on Aug. 30.

The Democratic National Conventional also kicked off last night, and while we’re not very political ‘round these parts, I know two things about Hollywood — this town loves Kamala Harris, and this town loves its cars. Slap ‘em together, like graphic designer Jon Sneider did, and you can buy your Hollywood for Harris bumper stickers right here!

Go on, show Kamala (and my brother) a little love…

In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read about Paramount extending its go-shop period to accommodate “serious suitor” Edgar Bronfman Jr., who upped his bid to $6 billion on Wednesday, and whether David Ellison should just walk away from Shari Redstone at this point and call David Zaslav to make a play for Warner Bros.

There are also items about Barbie 2, which has been in the press an awful lot this week for a movie that isn’t happening, plus, Mark Wahlberg is teaming up with LeBron James, Anya Taylor-Joy is heading back to Netflix, Chick-Fil-A is dipping its toes into Hollywood, and the uproar over the Megalopolis trailer.
