'Star Wars': Steven Soderbergh Isn’t the Only Big Director to Have Developed a Secret Movie at Lucasfilm
Plus, Nikki Glaser teams up with Judd Apatow, Dakota Johnson reveals details of her directorial debut, and everyone is getting tax credits from the state of California.

Happy Wednesday, my pretties!
Yesterday, I saw Joachim Trier’s family drama Sentimental Value, and while I hate reducing every movie to whether or not it’ll be an Oscar contender, I don’t think the presumed frontrunners have anything to worry about. Don’t get me wrong, Sentimental Value is a good movie featuring some mighty fine performances, but it’s not a great film like Trier’s previous picture starring Renate Reinsve, The Worst Person in the World.
I predict that Sentimental Value will earn a handful of Oscar nominations, possibly including Best Picture, but I suspect that Neon should focus its attention on It Was Just an Accident and The Secret Agent, both of which strike me as stronger contenders with better narratives.
On Tuesday night, I watched two new movies — All the Devils Are Here with Eddie Marsan and Sam Claflin, and the new Billy Magnussen thriller Violent Ends. The stylish, Reservoir Dogs-esque thriller All the Devils Are Here follows a group of thieves hiding out in the countryside, and it boasts a haunting ending that makes the film worth watching. Meanwhile, Violent Ends hits select theaters at the end of the month, and I’ll have more to say about it then, but you should know now that Magnussen shows off a very different side of himself in this gritty crime movie. There’s actually some pretty cool news about Magnussen below the paywall, so if you’re a fan, read on…

Today’s top story concerns Star Wars and the Adam Driver revelation about Steven Soderbergh’s planned Ben Solo movie that threw the internet into a tizzy earlier this week. Let’s just say that Soderbergh isn’t the only top director who flirted with Lucasfilm, only to fail to consummate the relationship. There are also items about Nikki Glaser teaming up with Judd Apatow, Dakota Johnson’s directorial debut, Chase Infiniti’s new film, Jason Segel’s reunion with James Ponsoldt, and the latest casting additions to The Social Network follow-up that’s heating up at Sony. Plus, a look at the trailer for the indie movie Wasteman, which finds rising stars David Jonsson and Tom Blyth in prison together.
