Summer Box Office Predictions: You’ll Believe Reboots Can Fly as Tom Cruise & Brad Pitt Battle Disney & Horror
Plus, the bidding war for Jeremy Saulnier's new movie, Miles Teller's return to Paramount, and the trailer for 'Weapons,' which will scare the shit out of you.

Happy Tuesday, folks!
What a wild few days it has been. We’ve seen all kinds of twists and turns, from word of a (fairly credible-sounding) lawsuit surrounding the writing credits of Top Gun: Maverick, to the news that the Nicole Kidman-Liev Schreiber series The Perfect Couple could return for a second season on Netflix, based on its Emmy campaign for Best Drama Series as opposed to Best Limited Series.
Of course, Netflix could always change its mind after the Emmy nominations are revealed and decide not to proceed with Season 2. Would that be scandalous, or just a smart strategy on the streamer’s part? I guess we’ll see how the nominations turn out…
Elsewhere, Terence Howard said he’d “cut his lips off” if he ever had to kiss a man — but don’t worry, folks, he’s not homophobic! While I do understand his perspective — one can accept gay people while still being vehemently straight and turning down “gay roles” — it’s the “cutting his lips off” part that, to me, signals his thinly veiled disgust. Perhaps that’s why Marvel had no problem kissing him goodbye after Iron Man.
And while Howard is, indeed, a very good actor, he probably should’ve said “Yes” to playing Marvin Gaye, as he’s unlikely to sniff a part that juicy again, and there was much more to Gaye’s life than his sexuality.
Finally, Mitch Moxley’s New York Times Magazine piece about a botched kidnapping that helped reveal a crypto scam is the kind of true-crime story that should’ve already been optioned by now. Is Hollywood sleeping on this article, or is a deal already underway in some corner of the industry?
Either tell me, or hire me, people!
Tonight, I offer my second annual summer box office predictions and explain why I’m taking the dinosaurs over the superheroes, and how it’s shaping up to be Hot Horror Summer.
There are also items about the bidding war surrounding Jeremy Saulnier’s new movie, Brad Pitt’s new A24 project, Dev Patel’s follow-up to Monkey Man, Miles Teller’s return to Paramount, Charli XCX’s latest movie, and the trailer for Zach Cregger’s Weapons.
