Summer Box Office Winners & Losers, From Blake Lively and 'Longlegs' to 'Furiosa' and 'Borderlands'
Plus, the stars of 'Past Lives' line up new movies, Gwyneth Paltrow returns to the big screen, and A24 nabs 'Queer' starring Daniel Craig.
It’s Thursday morning, and for everyone who isn’t already on vacation in the south of France, we’re that much closer to Labor Day Weekend, folks!
On Tuesday night, I attended the premiere of Lionsgate’s action-thriller 1992, which hails from director Ariel Vromen (The Iceman) and executive producer Snoop Dogg, who hit the red carpet beforehand.
The film stars Tyrese Gibson as an ex-con who is forced to defend his workplace — and more importantly, his son — from a group of thieves using the L.A. Riots as cover for their heist, given how the police are needed elsewhere.
Tyrese actually delivers a pretty good dramatic performance in 1992, which serves as Ray Liotta’s final film. He plays Scott Eastwood’s psychotic father and the film’s chief antagonist, and it’s a vintage Liotta performance in which he curses up a storm and threatens to kill everyone. No one says the word “fuckin’” quite like Liotta, that’s for sure, and I’m really going to miss his intense yet soulful presence on the big screen.
Last night, I saw Greg Kwedar’s A24 drama Sing Sing, and it was every bit as special as the critics have been saying it is since Sundance. Colman Domingo will absolutely be in the conversation for a Best Actor nomination, as I found his performance to be incredibly moving, and full of hope. Don’t miss this movie!
In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll find out who won and who lost at the Summer Box Office, where horror reigned supreme and blockbusters came through… for the most part.
Plus, there are also items about the stars of Past Lives, Gwyneth Paltrow returning to the big screen to team up with Timothee Chalamet, A24’s sexually graphic new acquisition starring Daniel Craig, Sony’s ill-advised remake of La Bamba, the return of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ series Lioness, and my thoughts on the trailer for Alex Wolff’s new thriller The Line.
