'Texas Chainsaw' Buzz: A24 Poised to Be Leatherface’s New Home Following Heated Auction for Iconic Horror IP

Plus, the showrunner caught between Season 2 of 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' and Season 3 of 'Big Little Lies,' and new movies starring Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and Lucy Liu.

It was a dark day for our nation on Wednesday, which saw conservative activist Charlie Kirk assassinated at the age of 31.

While I don’t agree with Kirk’s largely hateful opinions, I’m a staunch believer in the First Amendment, and I’ll defend his right to voice those opinions. Now, no one deserves to be shot down for speaking their mind, but as we all know, ugly opinions can have ugly consequences in the upside-down world in which we live. And now, a young father is dead, the lives of his children have been ruined forever, and the life of the even-younger shooter, whose name I won’t dignify by mentioning it here, is effectively over.

It’s a true shame, and a sad day for democracy, let alone discourse on social media.

Let’s hope the violence ends there and doesn’t escalate any further, as I shudder to think what justice looks like to some people in this case, and it’s scary to think about the consequences that Kirk’s indefensible murder could have down the line.

The truth is, I worry for the future of America and what the response from the right could look like, and I hope that this tragic, senseless act doesn’t spark another Civil War in this country.

Moving on, this week, I watched Andrew Renzi’s two-part Netflix documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, and I thought it was a fantastic, warts-and-all portrait of Charlie Sheen, who holds nothing back as he seeks redemption for his inexplicable behavior at the height of his Two and a Half Men fame, when he was the highest-paid actor on television.

Sure, it would’ve been nice to hear from Charlie’s father, Martin Sheen, or his brother, Emilio Estevez, but Sheen’s sad, harrowing story is more than enough to hold us in a vice-like grip, and he trusts Renzi enough not to shy away from the dirty details of his life story.

Martin and Emilio’s notable absences are covered by Sheen’s longtime co-star, Jon Cryer, and his second ex-wife, Denise Richards, both of whom are standouts among the talking heads. There’s a remarkable amount of archival footage featuring Charlie and Martin, so much so that the latter doesn’t even need to show up in person.

This is an up-close-and-personal look at Sheen, with all his demons laid bare, and I think it demonstrates a certain amount of introspection that could allow for the charming if troubled actor to make yet another comeback. That’s the kind of goodwill that fans still have for Sheen, having stuck by him for decades through his ups and downs.

I also watched a baffling thriller called Hallow Road starring Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys. I thought this movie looked good based on its trailer — the next Locke, perhaps — but I don’t know what I was thinking, as I didn’t care for it at all.

However, I’ll admit to googling one of those ridiculous “Ending Explained” pieces because the end of the film made no sense to me, and let me tell you, it led me down quite a rabbit hole. I can’t say I’d recommend Hallow Road, but perhaps you’ll see what so many people on Reddit saw and follow the breadcrumbs enough to admire the sheer chutzpah of the film in all its understated glory.

Speaking of Rhys, the star of The Americans and Perry Mason has signed on to join Rachel Brosnahan and Jack Reynor in Season 2 of Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+, where he’ll also star in the supernatural drama Widow’s Bay. Rhys will also soon be seen opposite Claire Danes in The Beast in Me on Netflix, and alongside John Krasinski in Amazon’s serial killer series Silent River. In other words, he’s a busy boy!

Tonight, you’ll read the latest update on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre auction, which has been going on since June, and you’ll also read about the showrunner caught between Season 2 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Season 3 of Big Little Lies.

There are also items about Legendary falling for author SenLinYu, Jessica Chastain’s new Netflix movie, Idris Elba’s new Apple movie, the latest on sequels to Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth, new TV shows starring Joel Kinnaman and Ricky Gervais, new films starring Oscar Isaac and Mark Ruffalo, and the trailer for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s new Netflix movie, The RIP.
