'Top Gun 3': Who Could Direct Tom Cruise's Sequel, and Why You Won’t Find Christopher McQuarrie on the List

A well-placed source says the two "need a break" from working together after the lackluster performance of the two-part 'Mission: Impossible' finale.

Happy Thursday, folks!

This week, I watched a ton of new stuff, including Anya Taylor-Joy’s upcoming Apple TV series Lucky, which remains under embargo until its July debut; Season 2 of Jon Hamm’s series Your Friends & Neighbors, which feels more and more like Sex and the City for men; and David Wain’s comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, which features Hamm as the titular Celebrity.

I also went on a bit of a Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio kick, watching James Cameron’s The Abyss, Martin Scorsese’s The Color of Money, and the Kevin Kline cop movie The January Man all in a row. I can’t say the latter was very good, but I’m glad I watched the other two in their entirety for the first time, having only seen bits and pieces of them on cable TV growing up. I wouldn’t call either film their director’s best, but there’s a lot to like about both of them.

This weekend, I plan to check out The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Hokum. I also plan to catch up with Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, which has been low on my priority list at the expense of other TV shows, and finish watching Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies, which I’ve somehow never seen before.

I’m working on my first list of Emmy predictions, and I’m still waiting for the Michael news cycle to settle down before weighing in on that film and the hoopla surrounding it on multiple levels — from the divide between the response from critics and audiences, to what it means for the musical biopic genre, the film’s awards chances, and what Lionsgate may have planned for the forthcoming sequel.

Instead, tonight’s newsletter focuses on Top Gun 3, and who may be in line to direct the Tom Cruise-led sequel now that it seems clear Joseph Kosinski has no plans to return.
