WB to Keep 'Superman' Sidelined During the Super Bowl, But Will the Studio Call Joe Rogan Down the Line?

Plus, an update to this morning's scoop about Jake Gyllenhaal and M. Night Shyamalan, and why Justin Baldoni's feud with Blake Lively has put his 'Pac-Man' movie in jeopardy.

Happy Wednesday night, folks! Apologies for the late-night send…

I just came back from a press screening of Screen Gems’ new slasher movie Heart Eyes, which I’ll be able to tell you about next week.

This weekend, I binge-watched all four episodes of Netflix’s new true-crime docuseries American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson, which manages to add something new to the well-trod tale. The project was produced by William Green and Aaron Ginsburg of The Cut, which also produced American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing, and I was moved to tears nearly every time the camera cut to Kim Goldman, the still-devastated sister of Ron Goldman. Clearly, the violent death of a loved one is something you never get over. The new O.J. docuseries is now streaming on Netflix.

Speaking of Netflix, this morning, the streamer had a little press brouhaha that it forgot to invite me to. Oops! Lucky for them, I still can’t wait to watch Season 3 of Squid Game on June 27 and The Old Guard 2 on July 2. I suppose I’ll have to wait until morning to learn when Gareth EvansHavoc finally comes out.

At least we won’t have to wait to see when Insidious 6 comes out, as Sony finally confirmed my recent scoop and announced that the sequel has been delayed another year.

This morning, Deadline broke the news that Neon had acquired writer-director Michael Shanks’ body horror movie Together starring the husband-and-wife team of Dave Franco and Alison Brie. Deadline reported that bidding was $15 million as of Tuesday night, and he imagined that the bidding would reach $20 million by the time all was said and done, but the truth lies somewhere in the middle, as I can exclusively report that the film sold for $17 million. That’s a solid deal considering the theatrical upside that this film has. That’s why I think this is a bigger win than Greg Jardin’s sale of It’s What’s Inside to Netflix for $17.5 million — a figure that included everyone’s backend.

Meanwhile, early box office reports have DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man looking to bark up a $30 million opening weekend, with New Line’s sci-fi thriller Companion expected to open to just a third of that despite strong buzz and glowing reviews. I saw Dog Man with three young boys on Monday night and it had them howling with delight.

Tonight’s newsletter features a column about the marketing machine behind James Gunn’s Superman, which is taking a knee during the Super Bowl.

Plus, there are items about Jake Gyllenhaal teaming up with M. Night Shyamalan, Justin Baldoni’s Pac-Man movie, Sony’s new action-comedy starring Eddie Murphy, the trailer for Jonathan Majors’ long-delayed drama Magazine Dreams, a Little House on the Prairie reboot on Netflix, and some of the streamer’s key 2025 release dates.
