Insiders: Who Might James Gunn Hire to Direct 'Wonder Woman' Now That DC’s Superhero Movie Has a Writer?

Plus, the highlights of the Venice and Toronto Film Festival lineups, the casting of Elon Musk, the latest addition to DC's 'Clayface,' and a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne.

Happy Wednesday afternoon, gang!

On Monday night, I drove to Santa Monica to catch the Beyond Fest screening of Michael Shanks’ new Neon movie Together, starring the husband-and-wife team of Dave Franco and Alison Brie. It’s an instant classic of the body horror genre, and I was squirming in my seat at the Aero, where the audience seemed to eat it up and have a blast doing so.

What caught me off guard, and what I liked about the script, is that Franco and Brie’s characters aren’t married in this film. They love each other, but they’re still a little unsure about spending eternity together, and that provides some interesting tension, especially when they’re confronted with a terrifying choice as their bodies begin to merge together.

I don’t know how Together is tracking to open at the box office, but I think it could be a sleeper hit this summer after all the blockbusters come out, even though Weapons does arrive the following week and is said to be showing very strong presales. Hopefully, the two genre films will be able to co-exist (ha!) at the box office, where horror has seen mixed results this year.

Final Destination: Bloodlines was a huge hit, but M3GAN 2.0 and I Know What You Did Last Summer underperformed. I suspect genre fans have been waiting for these two films and will show up to support them over the next few weeks.

As for Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it’s tracking to open around $110 million domestic — right in line with DC’s Superman, though we’ll see if it performs better overseas thanks to the drawing power of the MCU.

Tonight, you’ll read about who insiders are saying could be the right fit for DC’s Wonder Woman movie — if James Gunn opts not to direct the film himself, of course — as well as the highlights of the Venice and Toronto Film Festival lineups, including the top 13 movies I personally want to see at TIFF.

There are also items about the female lead in DC’s Clayface movie, a new Judge Dredd movie from Taika Waititi, the Dawson’s Creek reunion that’s on the horizon, a light at the end of the tunnel for the Fanning sisters’ WWII passion project, the intriguing casting swap on Michael B. Jordan’s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, the new horror movie from the producers of Barbarian, and tributes to both Ozzy Osbourne and Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Plus, find out who is playing Elon Musk!
