Exclusive: 'Yeti' Movie in the Works at Netflix From 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' Director Michael Chaves

Plus, there's a remake of 'The Bodyguard' in the works at WB, a 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' series in development at Amazon, and an update on 'The Alchemist.'

Happy Saturday, folks! And to those who celebrate, Happy Passover!

Last night, I saw the new Rami Malek movie The Amateur, which was no The Professional, that’s for sure. I thought it was watchable, and I was certainly willing to see where it was going, but I found this movie so deeply unsatisfying.

It’s basically about a nerdy government agent whose wife is murdered, so he vows to track down her four killers, and then he kills… half of them. WTF? Is it so hard for studios to give audiences what they want these days?

After The Amateur, my buddy and I went back to his place to watch a couple of Black Mirror episodes — Plaything and Bete Noire, both of which I liked.

The latter features a British actress named Rosy McEwen, who looks like the spitting image of a young Nicole Kidman, to the point where I was wondering how she’s never played a younger version of one of Kidman’s characters. Sure enough, she will soon be seen as Young Scarpetta in the Prime Video series Scarpetta, starring… Nicole Kidman!

Before we begin, a quick “Bye, Felicia!” to Mickey Rourke, who just got the boot from Celebrity Big Brother UK for being an asshole, and a note of congratulations to the entire stunt community now that the Academy has finally decided to honor stunts, starting with the 2028 ceremony honoring 2027 releases. For over 100 years, stuntmen and stuntwomen have been risking life and limb to entertain us, and it’s about time they get their due.

I understand why they weren’t recognized in the past, as there was some disagreement as to who the Academy should actually honor, but the award will be called Best Stunt Design, so I imagine it’ll go to the person who designs the stunt, not the person who actually performs it.

THR’s Borys Kit says that credit is due to action director David Leitch and stunt coordinator and designer Chris O’Hara of Stunts Unlimited, both of whom made presentations to the Academy’s board of governors. Leitch and Ryan Gosling made a big fuss about an Oscar for stunts in the run-up to The Fall Guy, and their campaign paid off. Now, how about celebrating some great stuntmen of the past with honorary Oscars, seeing as how deserving many of them were despite being ineligible at the time?

Today, I’ve got a scoop about a Yeti project that has moved from Sony to Netflix, plus, there are also items about a Bodyguard remake at Warner Bros., a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon series coming to Prime Video, the new project from Adolescence director Philip Barantini, the cast of Netflix’s Pride & Prejudice series, a look at the upcoming Nick Kroll-Andrew Rannells comedy, and new projects from Samuel L. Jackson, Michael B. Jordan, and Kathryn Newton, whose middle initial is L, for those wondering.
